Things do not look good for our favorite web-slinger from Queens. The Spiderman No Way Home trailer starts with the aftermath of Mysterio revealing that Spider-Man’s secret identity is Peter Parker. Parker’s life has been turned upside down as he has been labeled a “public enemy”. People are protesting outside his school, he gets ambushed in public, and he and his friends and family are seen being interrogated by government agents.
This all becomes too much for Parker so he seeks out the help of another New Yorker, Dr. Stephen Strange. Parker’s request is simple; to go back to life before Mysterio revealed his secret identity, before anyone knew he was Spider-Man. Looks like Strange is the man for the job as he tells Peter that there is something he can do. As Wong leaves for vacation, he warns Strange that the spell is too dangerous… but when has Dr. Stephen Strange listened to anyone? The trailer cuts to a scene where Dr. Strange is performing the aforementioned spell, erasing everyone’s knowledge that he is Spider-Man. Peter starts to backtrack his request. What about his best friend, Ned? What about MJ? Aunt May? Dr. Strange warns Peter to stop talking and then something seemingly breaks. According to Dr. Strange, it is because Peter is trying to live two lives. The trailer then cuts to scene of New York being warped, similar to those in Dr. Strange’s origin story, as well as gives us hints for what is to come as well as lots of questions.
1. Familiar Foes
IMDB reports that both Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx will reprise their roles as Doc Ock and Electro, respectively. This was confirmed in the trailer as it showcased a bolt of lightning and Molina’s Doc Ock uttered the spine chilling line, “Hello, Peter.” The audience also witnessed an infamous pumpkin bomb, a weapon used by the Green Goblin, as well as a very sandy gust of wind, hinting at Sandman. A “blink and you’ll miss it” scene of Lizard bursting through a window is also included in the trailer. Could Spider-Man be facing the Sinister Six? I only counted five in the trailer, however IMDB could have a hint for the sixth member.
2. J. Jonah Jameson is back!
IMDB has revealed that J.K. Simmons is reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson and could be making part of the “Secret Wars” come to life. In Marvel’s “Secret Wars” series, Jameson dons a “spider slayer suit” in order to take down a Venom consumed Spider-Man. While I don’t believe a Venom consumed Spider-Man is in the cards for “No Way Home”, I could see Jameson becoming the final piece of the Sinister Six.
3. Into the Spider-Verse
While IMDB has not confirmed that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will don their famous red and blue suits again, we can infer that they will be back as villains from their universes make appearances in the “No Way Home” trailer. However, the warping of the reality of New York reminds me of a contained warping of the reality of New York in another Marvel movie, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. This would be an excellent chance for the MCU to bring in Miles Morales’ Spider-Man as well as Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman.
Regardless, of what is to come, the tone of Marvel’s Spider-Man has seemed to shift. The once light-hearted Spider-Man franchise has since turned to darker and more complicated storylines. This trailer proves that gone are the days of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and that the multi-verse is here to stay.
